Composite Decking Built Over a Stream in Winstanley, Wigan
This bespoke composite decking installation on Castlemere Close in Winstanley transformed a difficult garden area above a stream into a substantial outdoor living space. Classic Stone decking was combined with contrasting Graphite detailing, integrated lighting, electrical sockets, a storage bench seat and a large raised planter.
The Challenge
The stream running beneath this part of the garden made it difficult for the homeowners to use the available space effectively. They wanted to create a large, practical outdoor area without losing the character of the garden or settling for a basic rectangular deck.
The finished design also needed to accommodate the unusual shape of the garden while providing useful seating, storage, planting, lighting and access to electrical power.
The DecKing Solution
DecKing designed and constructed a bespoke composite deck that extends across the area above the stream and follows the shape of the surrounding garden.
Classic Composite Decking in Stone was selected for the main surface, creating a clean and contemporary finish. Classic Graphite was used for the contrasting picture-frame border, bullnose edging and fascia boards, defining the shape of the installation and giving the deck a strong two-tone appearance.
A bespoke storage bench seat was incorporated into the design to provide practical garden storage without taking up additional floor space. We also constructed a large raised planter to soften the deck and create a dedicated area for planting.
Outdoor electrical sockets were installed for convenient garden power. The lighting design includes 30 remote-controlled, colour-changing LED lights, with uplights positioned around the picture-frame border and outward-facing lights installed within the Graphite fascia.
The Result
An awkward and previously underused area above the stream has become a spacious, practical and visually striking outdoor living space.
The Stone and Graphite colour combination emphasises the shape of the deck, while the integrated seating, storage, planter, sockets and lighting allow the homeowners to use it throughout the day and into the evening.
This project demonstrates how a carefully designed composite deck can overcome a challenging garden feature while adding useful space, storage and character.
